Are you entering the immense world of cybersecurity? Are you already involved in this? Are you starting? Have you already taken several courses or even certifications? Do you already have some experience? But do you want to improve your knowledge in cybersecurity?
Well, I’ll tell you, I think I’m in all of those scenarios and I started thinking… what can I do to improve my skills and get more experience? I found the answer from various cybersecurity courses and experts that I follow through social networks, especially YouTube and LinkedIn. I have seen several options which I think I can integrate to create a cybersecurity laboratory in my home with my available equipment and start applying or put into practice everything I have learned. After all, this is what these projects are about, DOING TESTS!!! TRY AND FAILURE!!! BUT ALWAYS KEEP GOING!!!

Why I’m doing this?
I’m building this cybersecurity home lab as part of my learning journey (not as an expert, but as a self-taught learner), a hands-on project that will allow me to develop and improve the skills needed to work in real-world security operations. My goal is to create an environment that simulates how a Security Operations Center (SOC) functions, where I can practice, experiment, and grow step by step as I learn about the many layers of cybersecurity.
This project is not about showcasing expertise; it’s about building it. It’s a comprehensive project to help me develop practical skills across the full cybersecurity lifecycle: network design, virtualization, firewall configuration, monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, offensive testing, and beyond. By designing and managing my own SOC-style environment, I will be able to explore how attacks happen, how defenses respond, and how security tools work together to protect systems and data.
The lab will be my training ground: a safe space to test ideas, make mistakes, and continuously improve as I progress in this field.
Purpose and Learning Goals
The main purpose of this project is to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Through this lab, I plan to:
- Learn how core SOC components work together, from network segmentation and firewalls to SIEM, vulnerability scanners, and automation tools.
- Practice real-world cybersecurity tasks such as log analysis, incident detection, alert investigation, and response workflows.
- Explore both sides of cybersecurity; building defenses while also learning how attacks are carried out.
- Continuously evolve the environment as I discover new technologies, techniques, and tools.
This lab is designed to grow with me. I will start with the basics and gradually introduce more complexity as I build confidence and understanding.
What I’m Going to Build
The project is divided into structured modules, each focused on learning a specific aspect of cybersecurity:
- Virtualization & Infrastructure: I will deploy a platform like Proxmox to manage virtual machines, maybe containers and security tools in a controlled environment.
- Network Design & Firewall: I plan to design a segmented network with VLANs and configure pfSense to control and monitor traffic.
- Operating Systems & Services: I will install and configure both Windows and Linux systems, including Active Directory and essential services like DNS, DHCP, and web hosting.
- Security Infrastructure: I aim to explore SOC tools such as Wazuh (SIEM), Security Onion (network monitoring), TheHive (incident response), Shuffle (automation), and vulnerability scanners like Nessus or OpenVAS and more.
- Offensive Testing: I intend to learn ethical hacking techniques, use penetration testing tools, and simulate real-world attacks to understand how defenses react.
- Defensive Engineering: I will practice creating detection rules, building incident response playbooks, and integrating threat intelligence feeds.
- Continuous Improvement: I’ll focus on building dashboards, tracking metrics, and learning how to measure and improve security over time.
Real-World Relevance
This project is structured to mirror how actual security teams operate. Every component, from monitoring logs to simulating malware attacks, reflects processes and workflows used in real organizations. Working through these scenarios will help me understand how different technologies interact and give me practical experience with the types of challenges faced in cybersecurity roles.

Through this project, I aim to build a strong, hands-on foundation in cybersecurity that goes beyond what can be learned from theory alone. I will gain experience working with industry relevant tools, designing secure architectures, and simulating realistic scenarios; all essential skills for a future role in a SOC or cybersecurity team.
This lab will continue to evolve as I do. As I grow more confident, I plan to expand it with cloud components, advanced automation, threat hunting workflows, and more complex attack simulations. Most importantly, this project will be a long-term space where I can keep learning, experimenting, and improving. AND YOU TOO!!
